Jun. 12th, 2007 05:05 amI know little about Islam. I know less about Sufism. But when I listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the mysticism seems so easy to embrace... and yet, scaringly complex. In his unique voice, he sang qawwali, ecstatic music of the Sufi. The voice that soars and swoops around and caresses. The voice expressing longing and ecstasy. Sensual, too.
Night Song (1996) is a crossover album of qawwali and Western electronica (provided by Michael Brook, a Canadian guitarist and producer). It is not traditional qawwali, one can almost label it as pop, but it creates a mixture which is both easy to listen and making hairs on one's neck stand up. With each listening, it seeps deeper into you. There you go,
