A czego Wy słuchacie latem?

A to było tak:
Parę dni temu, w audycji W. Manna jednym uchem wyłowiłam całkiem przyjemny utwór będący skrzyżowaniem Calexico, Beirut i Arcade Fire.

I've been feeling rather lost recently: I don't really know what's next. It seems I must make some decisions concerning my writing and, at this point, I could even say that advice is always welcome.

Anyway and whatever. There are more interesting things in the universe. Have you noticed Greg Dulli's latest project, The Gutter Twins? He and Mark Lanegan seem to have developed a rather vigorous musical relationship. I say, darker than The Twilight Singers but don't we all grow up?

Re-discovering my own shelves, I here present a Swedish "progressive rock" project. Clearly, I despise the term but this is how Paatos is being described. For me it's more trip-hopey (must be the female vocals) and deliciously melancholy. Perfect just before spring. If your curiosity has been piqued:

i. First, a meme I saw at [ profile] m_moneypenny's journal and that I suppose no-one will be willing to participate, but. Please, do.

1. Choose a number from 1 to... 1745.
2. I'll upload a song from my randomized playlist that goes with it.
3. If you feel like it, tell me what you think.
4. Profit!

Mind you, I have not included the file marked as 'bollywood music'. Thank me for the small mercies ;) Although, there are enough weird tracks here to scare you off anyway.

ii. In other news, just today I've finished watching Season One of Ugly Betty. I must admit I didn't expect to like it so much. Here's yet another show to keep up with.

iii. I'm finishing The Inheritance Of Loss by Kiran Desai. It's a very good book about non-belonging and love/hate. What are you reading lately?

iv. I sort of fell in love with this sentence from a Laurie Anderson song: Hi. This evening I’ll be reading from a book I just finished and since a lot of it is about the future, I’m going to start more or less on the last page, and tell you about my grandmother.

ciszej, bardziej melancholijnie )

Czego Wy słuchacie, by się wyciszyć? Mile widziane linki w komentarzach.

I know little about Islam. I know less about Sufism. But when I listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the mysticism seems so easy to embrace... and yet, scaringly complex. In his unique voice, he sang qawwali, ecstatic music of the Sufi. The voice that soars and swoops around and caresses. The voice expressing longing and ecstasy. Sensual, too.

Night Song (1996) is a crossover album of qawwali and Western electronica (provided by Michael Brook, a Canadian guitarist and producer). It is not traditional qawwali, one can almost label it as pop, but it creates a mixture which is both easy to listen and making hairs on one's neck stand up. With each listening, it seeps deeper into you. There you go, [ profile] akzseinga:

How many more times do I have to thank Peter Gabriel? It was his album where I first heard Nusrat and Night Song was released by Real World Productions. Well, thanks, Pete.

Let me know if you download.

I've never done a lyrics meme before. That's strange. So, here goes.

Step 1: Put your Media player on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) of the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from. [Comments will be screened until answers are posted]

first lines )

I hope you'll guess at least a half ot tese.

This is the first (and tiny) batch of my Christmas gifts.

For [ profile] le_mru and perhaps [ profile] akzseinga, if she's interested. And anyone else, really. Enjoy!

The Twilight Singers - A Stitch In Time (EP)

ETA: [ profile] choyna, I'm sorry, I had no idea you wanted it too. Perhaps I could redeem myself with Mark Lanegan's 'Bubblegum'? He's such a cheerful bloke!

Still elevated after the Saturday concert, I'm rewriting a meme I found at [ profile] slybrunette's journal. Bending the rules until they are as follows:

1. Go to PopCultureMadness and find the greatest hits for the year you were born
2. Copy the list of songs.
3. Bold the ones you like.
4. Strike out the ones you hate.
5. Italicize the ones you are familiar with but neither like nor hate.
6. Leave the ones you don't know as is.

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused
Damien Rice - 9 Crimes
The Beatles - Lady Madonna
Blue Oyster Cult - A Fire of Unknown Origin
Nine Horses - When Monday Comes Around
The Beatles - Abbey Road Medley
The Blue Nile - Let's Go Out Tonight

The Depeche Mode Fever is now officialy over. No food for the squee, no upcoming concerts and no new albums in predictable future. But.
Yesterday was the best.

When Depeche Mode first visited Warsaw in 1985, I was six years old and musically unaware.
Their second concert in the capital of Poland was rain-soaked, yet enjoyed by many but, alas, not me. Somehow it didn't fit into my music tastes back then, in September 2001.
The third gig has been their second show in Poland this year, with an altered summer setlist and open skies above. It had to be different from the March concert which, in itself, was absolutely wonderful.

let's get away just for one day )

And, goodness, I wish they did it again some time soon. I need things to look forward to.
Good thing we've got Depeche Mode Parties at least once a month.
vil: ([music] tea with john & george)
I'm going to a Depeche Mode concert tomorrow and since I don't really feel any excitement about it (having already seen them in March) I decided to devote myself to music tonight. Hence, some memes.

[ profile] m_moneypenny tagged me with a song meme.
List seven songs that you like right now. It doesn't matter the genre or if or do they have lyrics and are they good or not, but they must be songs that you really enjoy at this moment. Put this instructions in your Livejournal with the seven songs, and then tag another seven persons to know what they're listening.

Now, this is hard. I usually listen to albums, not songs. Let's try.

only one song )
